Research Field and Achievements

Prof. Liu Hongwu is a renowned expert on African studies and studied in Africa at an early age.  Over the past more than 20 years, he has been committing to the African studies and personnel training. As an important organizer and facilitator of China's African studies, he has published a large number of articles and books and opened up a new space for China’s Africology. In Sept. 2007, Liu Hongwu took part in the establishment of the Institute of African Studies (IASZNU), the first and biggest institute dedicated to comprehensive African studies established in Chinese high-learning institutions, and was appointed as the director of IASZNU. With a high starting point and the innovative concept of internationalization, he systematically and comprehensively advanced China’s African studies with the support of all circles. Prof. Liu proposed the ideals of "Affection for Africa, Chinese Characteristics and Global Perspective", organized research team, cultivated young talents, built academic platform, accumulated academic achievements, carried out international cooperation and completed a number of important and key projects and consulting reports. Africa-related works conducted by IAS were acknowledged by incumbent Central Government officials of the time, such as Premier Wen Jiabao, Vice President Xi Jinping, and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. The 120 volumes of "Series of African Studies of Zhejiang Normal University" which Prof. Liu Hongwu is the Editor-in-Chief, is the biggest project on African studies to be undertaken since the founding of the People's Republic of China. This project has the significance of filling the research gap. It received great attentions from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and now became the national key publication project. He has also organized international conferences in Africa and successfully set up “China-Africa Think Tanks Forum” (CATTF) with the supports from all sides. As one of the FOCAC institutionalization platforms, CATTF has become the international prominent academic brand linking Chinese and African ideological and intellectual communities. Prof. Liu also initiated the compilation of the institute periodical of African Studies, is in charge of the compilation of the yearly Africa Development Report, launched the “Professional Database of China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program”, established the first African Museum in China, and promoted the university to set up China-Africa International Business School and the Translation Centre for African Studies. These outstanding achievements made IASZNU gradually become a prominent think tank with great influences at home and abroad and the Ministry of Education Base for Regional and Country-Specific Studies. IASZNU is also selected to be the Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Zhejiang Province and Zhejiang Provincial Centre for Collaborative Innovation, and advanced the international standing of China’s African studies. In 2009, Liu Hongwu was awarded as the winner of the "China-Africa Friendship Awards--The Ten Chinese who Moved African People". The Volume 67 of the Ministry of Education Bulletin published in 2010 featured a special report titled "Zhejiang Normal University Actively Conducts African Studies, Contributing to National Foreign Strategy", covering the achievements and characteristics of African studies at ZNU, it concludes that IASZNU has become a model of construction of disciplinary innovation in Chinese high-learning institutions.
